Stashbay help
Getting started
Stashbay lives in the notification area (the tray) at the right of the taskbar. The first time it starts, a short tour lets you practice a real shake and pick your shortcut and shelf actions.
To open a shelf:
- Shake while dragging: start dragging anything and wiggle the mouse left and right.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Space from anywhere.
- Click the tray icon for a new shelf, or to bring back hidden ones.
- Screen-edge drop target (off by default): while dragging, push the cursor against a chosen edge for a moment.
A shelf that a shake opened goes away again if you don't drop anything on it. Set all of this up in Settings › Summon.
Dropping things in and dragging them out
Files and folders stay where they are: the shelf only remembers where they live. Images, links and text dragged from a browser or another app are saved as real files so you can drag them on. They are deleted when you clear the shelf, or after 7 days (Settings › General › Keep dropped content for).
Drag the whole stack, or select items in the expanded list, and drop them anywhere you would drop files from Explorer: a folder, the desktop, an email, a chat or a browser's upload button. Ctrl and Shift work as they do in Explorer.
After a drag out, the shelf can keep the items, remove them, or close once it is empty. Choose in Settings › General. If a file is renamed or moved on the same drive, the shelf follows it. Otherwise it shows Moved or deleted, with Locate… and Remove.
Shelf actions
The buttons along the bottom of a shelf run an action on its items. Drop straight onto one to run it without adding the items to the shelf, or select items and click it.
- Copy to and Move to: a favorite folder, or choose one. These use the same copy engine as Explorer, so you get the usual Replace, Skip or keep-both choices, and Undo in Explorer.
- Zip: next to the first item, in Downloads, or ask each time. The zip lands on the shelf. A cancelled zip leaves nothing behind.
- Copy path, Open with, Share (the Windows share sheet) and Show in Explorer.
Pick 3 to 5 actions for the shelf, in your order, in Settings › Actions. Every action is also in the item menu (right-click an item).
Avoiding accidental shelves
A shake only counts during a real drag and drop, so moving windows, selecting text, drawing and games don't open shelves.
- Change Sensitivity in Settings › Summon. Lower needs a bigger wiggle.
- Add apps under Don't detect shakes in these apps for tools where quick back-and-forth drags are normal.
- Right-click the tray icon and choose Pause shake detection for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or until you resume.
Keyboard and command line
On a shelf:
- Ctrl+O adds files, Ctrl+V pastes, Ctrl+C copies the selected items, Ctrl+A selects all.
- Space previews the selected item, and ← and → step through the shelf. Enter opens it, Del removes it, Esc hides the shelf.
- The Apps key or Shift+F10 opens the item menu, which also has Paste to folder….
From a command prompt or a shortcut, Stashbay.exe --add "C:\path\to\file.png" puts files on a shelf. --new-shelf, --show, --hide and --settings also work.
Keyboard shortcuts
These work from anywhere in Windows while Stashbay is running.
| Action | Default shortcut |
|---|---|
| Open a shelf | Ctrl+Shift+Space |
Trial and license
Stashbay is free to try for 14 days, with everything turned on. After that: Shelves keep working but hold up to 3 items, and shelf actions are off.
Entering your license key
- Buy a license. Your key appears on screen as soon as the payment goes through, and arrives by email.
- In Stashbay, open the License page in Settings.
- Paste the key and choose Activate. The PC needs to be online for this step.
Using it on more than one PC
One key works on up to 3 PCs. To move it to a new PC, deactivate it on the old one from the License page first. If the old PC is gone, free up its place at Manage devices, using the email address you bought with or the key itself.
Once activated, Stashbay works offline. When it's online it checks the license about once a week, so a refunded or revoked key stops working on its next check.
Bought Stashbay in the Microsoft Store? The Store edition is licensed through your Microsoft account instead, and doesn't use a key.
Updates
Stashbay checks for a new version on its own at most once a day, a minute after it starts, and asks before installing it.
Each update is checked against a fingerprint (SHA-256) before it runs, and installs over the current version without touching your data. Updates for the Microsoft Store edition come through the Store.
See what’s new in each version.
Your data and uninstalling
Stashbay keeps its settings and data on your PC, in this folder (paste it into File Explorer’s address bar to open it):
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Hedgerow\Stashbay
To back it up, quit Stashbay and copy that folder.
To uninstall, open Windows Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Stashbay and choose Uninstall. Your data folder is kept, so delete it yourself if you want it gone.
Still stuck?
Email support@hedgerowapps.com and we’ll get back to you. Mention your Stashbay version (shown in Settings › About) and your Windows version. More answers are on the support page.
