Linkweave help
Getting started
The first time Linkweave starts, a short tour lets you try it on a sample PDF and page, pick your hotkey and default link format.
After that, Linkweave lives in the notification area (the tray). Press Ctrl+Alt+L in any app to open the popup:
- Top: the current item, with Copy link, Hook to… and Reveal.
- Middle: the items hooked to it. Click one to open it.
- Bottom: Find an item… to search everything you have seen or hooked.
Clicking the tray icon opens the popup for the app you were just using. Right-click it for Recent items, Settings and more.
Hooking two items
- Open the popup on the first item and click Hook to… (Ctrl+L).
- Search for the other item by title, or paste its link, path or web address.
- Pick it. Both items now list each other.
Or use Copy hook (Ctrl+Shift+C) on one item, then Hook to copied (Ctrl+Shift+L) on the other. Both are in the More actions menu. To remove a hook, select it in the list and press Delete.
Copying links
Copy link (Ctrl+C in the popup) uses your default format. The others are in the Copy link as… menu:
- Rich link: pastes as a clickable title in apps that support it.
- Markdown link:
[Title](link). - Plain path or URL.
Rich and Markdown links to files use a linkweave: link, which opens the file even after it has moved. A linkweave: link to something Linkweave hasn't seen on this PC shows where it points and waits for you to click Open. Programs and scripts are shown in File Explorer, never run. Change the default format in Settings › General. If clicking links stops working, click Repair there.
Which apps work
Settings › Supported apps lists the apps Linkweave knows, what it reads in each, and whether it worked this session. They include File Explorer, Edge, Chrome and other browsers, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Notepad, and apps that show the file's full path in their title.
- For apps that only show a file name, Linkweave matches it against the files that app has open. If more than one could fit, it lets you pick.
- For a document that has never been saved, Linkweave asks you to save it first.
- In an app it can't read, it says Can't detect what's open and search still works.
- Firefox may need a setting turned on. The steps are in Supported apps.
Moved, missing and offline items
Links to files follow moves and renames on the same drive, and apps that save by replacing the file.
- Missing: the file couldn't be found, for example after it was deleted or moved to another drive. Choose Locate… to point to it, or Remove.
- Unavailable: the file is on a drive or network location that isn't connected right now. Linkweave never waits on it.
Back up your hooks, or move them to another PC, with Settings › Data › Export… and Import….
Keyboard shortcuts
These work from anywhere in Windows while Linkweave is running.

Trial and license
Linkweave is free to try for 14 days, with everything turned on. After that: Existing hooks still open and Copy link keeps working. You can add 3 new hooks a day.
Entering your license key
- Buy a license. Your key appears on screen as soon as the payment goes through, and arrives by email.
- In Linkweave, open the License page in Settings.
- Paste the key and choose Activate. The PC needs to be online for this step.
Using it on more than one PC
One key works on up to 3 PCs. To move it to a new PC, deactivate it on the old one from the License page first. If the old PC is gone, free up its place at Manage devices, using the email address you bought with or the key itself.
Once activated, Linkweave works offline. When it's online it checks the license about once a week, so a refunded or revoked key stops working on its next check.
Bought Linkweave in the Microsoft Store? The Store edition is licensed through your Microsoft account instead, and doesn't use a key.
Updates
To get the latest version, choose Check for updates in Linkweave. It asks before installing anything.
Each update is checked against a fingerprint (SHA-256) before it runs, and installs over the current version without touching your data. Updates for the Microsoft Store edition come through the Store.
See what’s new in each version.
Your data and uninstalling
Linkweave keeps its settings and data on your PC, in this folder (paste it into File Explorer’s address bar to open it):
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Hedgerow\Linkweave
To back it up, quit Linkweave and copy that folder.
To uninstall, open Windows Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Linkweave and choose Uninstall. The uninstaller asks whether to remove your data too.
Still stuck?
Email support@hedgerowapps.com and we’ll get back to you. Mention your Linkweave version (shown in Settings › About) and your Windows version. More answers are on the support page.
