Copyloft help

Getting started

Copyloft lives in the notification area (the tray) at the right of the taskbar. The first time it starts, it lets you pick the shortcut and where the panel opens, then has you copy and paste a sample to try it.

  • Left-click the tray icon to open your history.
  • Right-click it for Open Copyloft, Pause, Clear history…, Settings, About / License and Quit.

From then on, everything you copy is kept. If the icon is hidden under the ^ arrow, drag it onto the taskbar so it is always visible.

Finding and pasting

Press Ctrl+Shift+V to open the panel over whatever you're doing, and start typing to search. Every word you type must match. Use the filters for text, links, images, files or colors, one app, or Today, Last 7 days or Last 30 days.

  • Enter pastes the selected card into the app you were using, and puts you back where you were typing.
  • Shift+Enter pastes it as plain text. Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9 paste the card with that number.
  • Shift+arrow keys select several cards. They paste one after another, separated by new lines.
  • Esc closes the panel. Shift+F10 or the menu key opens a card's menu.

In Settings › General, choose a wide Bottom strip or a compact List near the cursor, make plain text the default, or pick Copy only to put an item on the clipboard without pasting it.

Pinboards

Pinboards keep the things you paste often. Pinned items never expire and stay when you clear your history.

  • Right-click a card and choose Pin to, or drag cards onto a pinboard's tab.
  • Inside a pinboard, drag cards to reorder them.
  • Delete inside a pinboard removes a card from that board only. Shift+Delete deletes it from your history too.

Rename pinboards, change their color or order, and add new ones in Settings › Pinboards.

Preview and edit

Select a card and press Space to see the full text or image. You can change text there before pasting it.

  • Ctrl+Enter or Paste pastes it, Copy puts it on the clipboard, and Esc goes back.
  • Save changes keeps your edit in the history.

Edited text pastes as plain text, since the original formatting no longer matches.

Privacy and history settings

In Settings › Privacy:

  • Ignore sensitive content is always on. Anything an app marks as private is never read or saved.
  • Password managers are on the excluded apps list from the start. Add more, or choose Restore the default list.
  • Pause capture for 5 minutes, 1 hour, or until you resume. The tray menu has the same options.
  • Clear history when I sign out deletes everything except pinned items each time you sign out of Windows.

In Settings › History, choose how long to keep items, the largest image to keep in full (bigger images are kept as a smaller copy), and whether copying something again gets its own card. Clear history… removes the last hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks or everything. Export… saves every item and your pinboards to a folder.

Good to know

  • Pasting an old item doesn't move it to the top. Copying it again does.
  • Apps running as administrator can't receive a paste from Copyloft. It copies the item instead and asks you to press Ctrl+V.
  • Win+V: turn on Use Win+V for Copyloft in Settings › Hotkeys to open Copyloft with Win+V while it runs. Turn it off and Windows' own clipboard history works as before.
  • Paste previous item and Pause or resume capture can have their own shortcuts in Settings › Hotkeys.

Trial and license

Copyloft is free to try for 14 days, with everything turned on. After that: Copyloft keeps recording and nothing is deleted. The panel shows your newest 25 items, and your pinboards stay usable for pasting. Adding to pinboards needs a license. Export always works.

Entering your license key

  1. Buy a license. Your key appears on screen as soon as the payment goes through, and arrives by email.
  2. In Copyloft, open the License page in Settings.
  3. Paste the key and choose Activate. The PC needs to be online for this step.

Using it on more than one PC

One key works on up to 3 PCs. To move it to a new PC, deactivate it on the old one from the License page first. If the old PC is gone, free up its place at Manage devices, using the email address you bought with or the key itself.

Once activated, Copyloft works offline. When it's online it checks the license about once a week, so a refunded or revoked key stops working on its next check.

Bought Copyloft in the Microsoft Store? The Store edition is licensed through your Microsoft account instead, and doesn't use a key.

Updates

To get the latest version, choose Check for updates in Copyloft. It asks before installing anything.

Each update is checked against a fingerprint (SHA-256) before it runs, and installs over the current version without touching your data. Updates for the Microsoft Store edition come through the Store.

Your data and uninstalling

Copyloft keeps its settings and data on your PC, in this folder (paste it into File Explorer’s address bar to open it):

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Hedgerow\Copyloft

To back it up, quit Copyloft and copy that folder.

To uninstall, open Windows Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Copyloft and choose Uninstall. The uninstaller asks whether to remove your data too.

Still stuck?

Email support@hedgerowapps.com and we’ll get back to you. Mention your Copyloft version (shown in Settings › About) and your Windows version. More answers are on the support page.
